I was at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a magical place dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants. Watching the baby elephants splash in their mud baths, I got down on one knee, determined to capture the perfect photo.
But one mischievous little elephant had other plans. With a gleeful trumpet and a big splash, I was completely drenched in mud.
And I mean drenched. Teeth, hair, everything. It wasn’t just a mud bath—it was a mud makeover!
The crowd around me burst into laughter, offering commentary like, “Mud is great for your skin!” and “You’ll be glowing tomorrow!” True, if I’d been in a grumpy mood, I could have focused on the downsides: mud in my mouth (yep, tasted it), potential viruses, or the sheer indignity of walking around looking like a mud monster.
But positivity reminded me of a favorite saying: “No mud, no lotus.”
Just like the lotus flower needs muddy waters to bloom, we humans need challenges to grow. Tough times build resilience, wisdom, generosity, and strength. We emerge from them as better versions of ourselves.
Granted, my mud bath wasn’t exactly a life-altering challenge, but it did give me a choice: I could either sulk about my “muddy predicament” or smile and roll with it (muddy teeth and all). I chose gratitude—for the experience, the cheeky elephant, and the reminder to embrace life’s messiness.
And that’s when it hit me: the best way to thank my little mud-slinging friend was to support her future.
So, I adopted her!
Meet Korbessa, the cheeky baby elephant who taught me that a muddy smile is always better than a frown ♥️ !
